Frequently Asked Questions
My kid has never played lacrosse — is that okay?
Typically, we recommend that players have at least 1-2 seasons of experience before joining. It is recommended that new players if possible start with a local recreational league or clinic to get a feel for the game and develop basic stick skills. In the future there may be opportunities for beginners to join R3VA as practice only squads, but for Summer 2026 we are focused on players with some prior experience.
How much practice should my kid be doing at home?
There is no substitute for stick skills and footwork. A player should be practicing at home at least 10 minutes, 2-3 times a week. Time and time again, those who work harder and do consistent basic wall ball and training alone far outperform those who only show up to practice. If your kid is talented and is cruising through practice but not doing any work at home, they will eventually struggle or be passed by players who are putting in the work — usually by the JV to high school level.
What if we can’t afford the gear?
Reach out. We can connect you with used gear or help problem-solve.
Also, I will stress the following: an expensive shaft is almost never worth it for a youth player. A $20-50 shaft is more than sufficient for a rising 3rd-8th grader, and even for older players, the difference between a $50 and $150 shaft is negligible. The most important parts of the stick are the head and the mesh / pocket, which is professionally strung and can be reused for years. The shaft is more of a personal preference and can be upgraded as the player grows and develops.
Over and over again I have seen parents spend hundreds of dollars on a shaft for a youth player that is not durable and ends up breaking within a season, while a cheaper shaft would have lasted.
Can my kid play on both teams?
Typically no. In tournaments, it’s normally allowed for a player to play up an age group but not down, so a 10U player could play on the 12U team but not the 8U team. However, we want to be mindful of the commitment and time required for each team, and we want to avoid overloading players with too many practices and games. If there is a specific situation or request, please reach out and we can discuss on a case-by-case basis.
In general, you will be playing for the team you are registered for, which sometimes spans two age groups (e.g. a 10U team may have some rising 4th graders and some rising 5th graders) — but you will not be playing for multiple teams.
For example, 2035/2036, 2033/2034, and 2031/2032 may be combined into a single team. This is normally to fill the roster if a single age group does not have enough players to field a team. In general, you will be playing for the team you are registered for.
What if the team doesn’t fill up?
If we don’t hit minimum enrollment (dependent on tournament and style), we issue full refunds (minus any transaction fees) and let you know as early as possible.
Can I volunteer as a coach or helper?
Absolutely — email us.
